Bridal Session Tips: How to Prepare for Timeless, Stress-Free Bridal Portraits

Bridal sessions are one of my favorite parts of the wedding experience. They’re calm, intentional, and give you the space to truly soak in being a bride—without the pressure of a full wedding day timeline. Whether you’re dreaming of classic, romantic portraits or something a little more editorial, a little preparation goes a long way.

Here are my best tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourself during your bridal session.

1. Schedule Your Hair & Makeup Trial for the Same Day

If possible, plan your bridal session on the same day as your hair and makeup trial. This gives you a true preview of your full wedding-day look and allows time for adjustments before the big day.

Pro tip: Bring inspiration photos, but trust your professionals—they know how styles translate on camera.

2. Choose a Location That Matches Your Wedding Aesthetic

Your bridal session location should complement your dress and overall wedding style.

Think about:

  • Elegant gardens or estates for a romantic look
  • Historic churches or venues for timeless portraits
  • Open fields or soft greenery for an airy, natural feel

If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you choose a location that photographs beautifully and fits your vision.

3. Steam Your Dress (and Bring a Hanger)

Wrinkles show up more than you might expect in photos. Make sure your dress is freshly steamed and transported carefully. A sturdy hanger is also helpful for detail shots and between locations.

4. Bring the Right Shoes (and a Backup Pair)

Bring your wedding shoes for photos, even if you don’t plan to wear them the entire time. Heels photograph beautifully—but having a comfortable backup pair (like flats or sandals) will keep you relaxed between shots.

5. Don’t Forget the Details

Details help tell the full story of your bridal look. Consider bringing:

  • Veil or hair accessories
  • Jewelry
  • Invitation suite
  • Perfume
  • Bouquet (fresh or faux)

These items add variety and depth to your gallery.

6. Practice Movement, Not Posing

You don’t need to know how to pose—I’ve got you covered. Instead, think about movement: walking slowly, adjusting your dress, taking a deep breath, or gently holding your bouquet. These small actions create natural, elegant images.

I’ll guide you every step of the way so nothing feels stiff or awkward.

7. Trust the Process (and Yourself)

It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous at first. Give yourself grace, trust your photographer, and allow yourself to enjoy the moment. Bridal sessions are meant to be fun, relaxed, and confidence-boosting.

Some of the most beautiful images happen once you stop overthinking and simply let yourself be present.

8. Consider Timing & Lighting

Soft, natural light is key. Late afternoon or early evening sessions often provide the most flattering light, especially during warmer months. I’ll help plan the timing so we make the most of the light and avoid harsh midday sun.
