Emily & Ben | A Romantic Wedding at The Overlook at the Vista in Aiken, South Carolina
Some wedding days are beautiful, and some wedding days remind you exactly why you love what you do. Emily and Ben’s wedding at The Overlook at the Vista in Aiken, South Carolina, was a little bit of both. From emotional first looks and meaningful family heirlooms to their beloved dogs, a surprise haircut, and the sweetest vintage car send-off, every part of their day felt personal to them.
The forecast called for storms, but Emily and her girls had a plan. They buried a sausage as an old wives’ tale to keep the rain away, and somehow, it worked! Not a single drop of rain fell throughout the day. Instead, we were treated to a beautiful celebration filled with so much love, laughter, and the kind of moments that make wedding photographs timeless.
A Wedding Day Filled With Meaningful Details
One of my favorite things about Emily and Ben’s wedding was how intentional every detail felt. Nothing was simply an accessory or another item on a wedding checklist. So many pieces of their day carried a story, a memory, or a connection to someone they love.
Emily wore earrings that belonged to her late grandmother, while Ben wore cufflinks belonging to his late grandfather. These little details were beautiful reminders that even though some loved ones couldn't be there in person, their presence was still woven into the day.
Their wedding was also filled with the people who mean the most to them. Emily’s sister did her hair, and a very close family friend coordinated the wedding. Having the people you love contribute to such an important day makes the memories even more special.
The Overlook at the Vista was the perfect setting for their celebration, especially because it allowed them to include two very important members of their family: their dogs! In the background, horses wandered nearby, and I could hear riding lessons taking place while I photographed the wedding details. It was such a unique, peaceful backdrop for a day that was already full of personality.
A First Look With Dad and Granddad
Some of the most emotional photographs from Emily and Ben’s wedding happened before the ceremony even began.
Emily shared a first look with both her dad and her granddad, and these are moments I know she will treasure for the rest of her life.
Her granddad was in his 90s, still getting around, joking with everyone, and enjoying the celebration. Watching him see Emily in her wedding dress was incredibly special. When they saw each other, the emotions came pouring out, and they both cried.
There is something so meaningful about photographs like these. They capture more than what someone looked like on a particular day. They preserve a feeling, a relationship, and a moment in time that can never be recreated.
After sharing these special moments with her dad and granddad, Emily was ready to walk down the aisle with her dad beside her.
The Sweetest Flower Grannies
Instead of traditional flower girls, Emily and Ben chose something even more personal: flower grannies!
All three grandmothers walked out together in the most beautiful soft pink floral dresses, tossing rose petals as they made their way down the aisle. It was such a sweet way to honor the women who have played important roles in their lives.
I loved seeing them included in such a meaningful part of the ceremony. These are the kinds of personal touches that make a wedding feel completely unique to the couple.
As the ceremony began, Emily and Ben stood surrounded by the people who love them most. Their ceremony was heartfelt, their details were intentional, and the love between them was easy to see.
A First Dance to Remember
After the ceremony, it was time to celebrate!
Emily and Ben shared their first dance to *From the Ground Up* by Dan + Shay. It was such a fitting choice for a couple beginning their own life together, building a future rooted in love, family, and all the little things that make a marriage special.
They also shared special dances with Emily’s dad and Ben’s mom. Between those dances and the emotional first looks earlier in the day, there were so many moments that reminded everyone just how much family meant to these two.
And then there was Ben’s groom’s cake!
His mom made the cake herself, and not only was it delicious, but it looked just like a realistic piece of wood. It was such a creative detail and another example of how much thought and love went into their celebration.
A Few Photos With Their Favorite Four-Legged Family Members
One of the biggest reasons Emily and Ben chose The Overlook at the Vista was that they could bring their dogs. These two aren't just pets to them. They're family.
We took some time to head back to their cabin and capture photographs with their pups, and I am so glad we made room for those moments in the timeline.
Your wedding day is about celebrating the life you're building together, and for Emily and Ben, their dogs are a huge part of that life. Having photographs with them meant including a piece of their everyday happiness in the story of their wedding.
These are the kinds of photographs that become even more meaningful with time. Years from now, they will be able to look back and remember that their dogs were part of this chapter, too.
Taking a Moment for Bridal Portraits
Amid all the excitement, we also made time for Emily’s bridal portraits.
I am so glad we did.
Wedding days can move incredibly quickly. There are people to greet, moments to experience, and a timeline that seems to fly by before you know it. Stepping away for a few minutes gave Emily a chance to slow down, breathe, and soak in the fact that she was finally a bride.
Her portraits turned out beautifully, and I love knowing that she had a little time just for herself in the middle of such a full day.
As a wedding photographer, these are some of my favorite moments to create. Beautiful portraits are wonderful, but giving a bride the opportunity to pause and truly experience her wedding day is just as important.
The Surprise Nobody Saw Coming
Just when everyone thought the day couldn't get any more memorable, Emily decided to make a change!
After dinner, her sister-in-law cut her hair, and Emily surprised everyone with a brand-new hairstyle and a different dress. It was such a fun way to switch things up and give the reception a completely new energy.
When I asked Emily how she felt afterward, she said she felt 20 pounds lighter.
You could feel the excitement surrounding her transformation. It was spontaneous, fun, and so perfectly Emily.
Meanwhile, Ben had a slightly different thought on his mind.
As the haircut was happening, he was wondering how he was going to turn on the headlights of the vintage car they would be leaving in. It was an older model, and he had never driven it before. He wanted to make sure he could actually see while driving!
We got such a kick out of that. While everyone else was focused on Emily's big reveal, Ben was already thinking ahead to the practical details of getting them safely down the road.
Honestly, that little moment was just as memorable as the surprise itself.
Dancing the Night Away
After the big reveal, the celebration continued with plenty of dancing.
Their DJ was easily one of the best I've worked with, keeping the energy going and making sure the dance floor stayed full. Between the music, the laughter, and everyone celebrating Emily and Ben, the reception was the perfect ending to a day that had already delivered so many unforgettable moments.
These are the parts of a wedding day that I love documenting. The planned moments matter, but so do the spontaneous ones: the laughter between friends, the people singing along, and the memories being made when everyone finally lets loose. Emily and Ben's wedding was full of both.
A Vintage Thunderbird Send-Off
To close out the night, Emily and Ben made their exit in one of the most meaningful details of the entire wedding: his grandparents’ vintage Thunderbird.
The car was a soft baby pink, complete with a “Just Married” message on the wheel cover. It was charming, timeless, and full of sentimental value.
Just like Emily’s earrings and Ben’s cufflinks, the car carried a connection to the generations who came before them. It was such a fitting way to end a wedding that celebrated not only their love for one another but also the family and memories that helped shape them.
And after Ben's earlier concern about figuring out the headlights, I couldn't help smiling as they prepared to drive away together! Their send-off was the perfect final chapter to a day filled with meaningful details, happy tears, and a whole lot of joy.
Emily & Ben, Your Wedding Day Was So Special
Emily and Ben, thank you for allowing me to capture such a meaningful day in your lives.
From your emotional first looks with family to your flower grannies, your sweet pups, the surprise haircut, and your vintage Thunderbird exit, your wedding was a beautiful reminder that the most memorable celebrations are the ones that reflect the people at the center of them.
I hope that when you look through your photographs years from now, you don't just remember how everything looked. I hope you remember exactly how it felt.
I hope you remember the tears you shared with your granddad, the joy of dancing with your family, the laughter surrounding your reception, and the little details that made the day unmistakably yours.
Most of all, I hope these photographs allow you to relive every bit of it.
Congratulations, Emily and Ben! It was an honor to tell your story.
