If you’ve ever photographed a toddler, you know that the best moments happen when you let go of expectations and follow their lead—and Kyren’s session in Wagener, South Carolina was the perfect example of that.
When Kyren first arrived at the park, he wanted absolutely nothing to do with me—or my camera. He kept his distance, avoided eye contact, and made it very clear that he was on his own schedule. And honestly? That’s completely okay. Some of the most meaningful photos come from giving kids the space to warm up naturally.
As the session went on, Kyren began to relax. Before long, he was throwing his ball, laughing out loud, and running freely around the park. Those candid moments—when kids forget the camera is even there—are where the magic really happens.
I brought along a small chair as a prop, but Kyren had other ideas. The only way he wanted anything to do with that chair was by throwing it, flipping it upside down, and making it part of his own game. Instead of stopping him, we leaned into it—and those playful, unplanned moments turned into some of my favorite images from the session.
Kyren showed up wearing the cutest orange vest paired with Timberlands, and it was absolute perfection against the natural greens of the park. His mom kept reminding him to leave the vest on, but eventually, Kyren won that battle. Once the vest came off, he started throwing it around, laughing nonstop, and clearly decided that was the best part of the entire session.
Sometimes, the photos parents love the most aren’t the perfectly styled ones—but the ones that capture their child’s true personality.
By the end of the session, both mom and I were sweaty, tired, and worn out—but we also knew we had something special. Kyren’s session was full of movement, laughter, and genuine moments, and the final gallery reflects exactly who he is right now.
These are the kinds of photos that families look back on years from now and say, “That was him. That was that stage.” And that’s why I do what I do.
If you’re looking for child or family photography in Wagener, South Carolina, and want images that feel real, playful, and full of life, I’d love to work with you. Sessions don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful—sometimes the messy, energetic, joy-filled moments tell the best story of all.
